S9 was a large commercial development which provided offices for Cancer Research UK and Unicef. The building has floor slabs with areas of approximately 3500m2 for 6 floors and a further 3 floors at approximately 2000m2.
Architectural concrete finishes are incorporated throughout the development for columns, walls and slab soffits. This required careful consideration of concrete mixes, construction processes and choice of formwork systems in order to deliver the high quality consistent finish required. Columns were produced off site as pre-cast units using high quality formwork. Soffit finishes were achieved using a panelised system with infill strips. Joint layouts in the soffits were consistent throughout following consultation and agreement with the design team. A large feature wall also has a regular joint pattern to meet architectural requirements.
2 main cores were produced using self-climbing formwork systems, which were constructed ahead of the floors slabs. Screens were used along the south elevation of the building adjacent to the railway for protection as the construction progressed.
