World Environmental Day Competition

We would like to congratulate the winner of World Environmental Day Competition - Jamie Leaver at Union House for his rainwater recycling initiative.

Jamie’s innovative idea was to collect clean uncontaminated rainwater from roofs, downpipes and guttering. This accumulated water can then be used for a range of uses including the dampening down of hard standing to reduce dust generation, topping up wheel washers and for watering decorative plants on hoarding.

This initiative is not only good for the environment by reducing the amount of potable water used (and the embodied energy/carbon within that) but also provides cost savings for the site both in terms of water consumption and disposal.

The Ellmer board would encourage that this good practice is implemented across all our sites, where practical.

Background Information:

World Environmental Day - The United Nations’ most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment.  This year the chosen theme is ‘Go Wild for Life’ which is designed to emphasise the plight of many endangered species across the globe. The wider construction industry has a big role to play in managing its impact in terms of responsible procurement, carbon emissions and natural habitat.
