Teddington business scoops prestigious £70m heathrow airport contract

A new report unveils Teddington’s Byrne Bros. (Formwork) Ltd, a part of Byrne Group Plc, as one of the UK businesses behind the development of Heathrow’s brand new
Terminal 2.

The company scooped a prestigious £70 million contract to deliver the core concrete structure for Terminal 2’s satellite pier, Terminal 2B, which is set to open in June next year.

The £2.5bn infrastructure development is one of the of the largest privately funded construction projects in the UK. More than 140 UK businesses have been involved in its construction, drawing together expertise from across the country and supporting thousands of jobs.

Byrne Bros. (Formwork) will have their work showcased on a Global stage with more than 20 million passengers from around the world passing through every year.

Speaking about the impact of Terminal 2 throughout the UK, Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin MP said: “The building of Heathrow’s Terminal 2 has delivered real benefits, not just to the South East but to many regions throughout the country as it has sourced the necessary skills, expertise, raw materials and services it needs.

"I am proud that we are known for having a high quality, highly skilled and hardworking supply chain. This report clearly demonstrates that infrastructure, engineering and construction companies across the country are sharing the benefits from projects such as T2 and helping to build a stronger UK economy."

For Byrne Bros. (Formwork) the contract fuelled a host of growth and development opportunities, creating roles for apprentices and enabling them to develop new skills, including the use of 3D and 4D tools. The company was also able to invest in new equipment and processes, including the creation of pre-assembly facilities, which are now being deployed across the company to support future projects.

Speaking about the project, Colin Potts, Project Director at Byrne Bros. (Formwork) said: "The scale of the project, the short turnaround time and the confines of an airside environment all meant that a different approach was required. This contract helped us to change the way we work. It improved the skills across Byrne Bros. and we developed innovative approaches to construction which helped to boost productivity, improve safety and deliver greater sustainability."

Vince Cable, MP for Twickenham where Byrne Brothers is based added: “I am delighted to see that a local company, Byrne Bros., has been able to benefit from major contract work at Heathrow using innovative technology. I shall soon be visiting the company to congratulate them and discuss the business outlook."

John Holland-Kaye, Heathrow Development Director, concluded: "Investment in Heathrow is making a significant contribution to Britain’s economic recovery, creating jobs across the UK, allowing our suppliers to invest in training and innovation and giving them a fantastic showcase for their work. It demonstrates how expansion at Heathrow will not only create jobs when it has been built, by connecting British exporters directly with emerging growth markets, but also create jobs across the UK while it is being built."

In the coming weeks, the development of Terminal 2 will move into a new phase as Heathrow, its airlines and other operators begin to get the terminal ready for passengers. This will include six months of intensive preparations, with more than 180 trials and tests involving over 14,000 people.
