Byrne Group supporting Suicide Prevention Day

Every year, organisations and communities around the world come together to raise awareness of suicide.

In 2018, in the UK and Ireland alone, there were 6,839 people who died of suicide. Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy, and we know that suicide is preventable.

At Byrne Group, through a company-wide Occupational Health Campaign, we are highlighting to our workforce the signs that may be present in somebody suffering anxiety and/or stress so that they know the signs to look out for in each other. Also, by talking about the subject, we strive to remove the associated stigma.

Preventing suicide is often possible and everyone can play a part in its prevention! There are many things that you can do daily to prevent suicidal behaviour. You can raise awareness about the issue, educate yourself and others about the causes of suicide and warning signs for suicide, show compassion and care for those who are in distress in your community, question the stigma associated with suicide, suicidal behaviour and mental health problems and share your own experiences.

Signs that someone may need support:

Feeling restless and agitated

Feeling tearful

Not wanting to talk to or be with people

Not wanting to do things you usually enjoy

Using alcohol or drugs to cope with feelings

Finding it hard to cope with everyday things

Not replying to messages or being distant

Their work just doesn’t appear to be at the same standard

New pattern of unexplained lateness or absences

Recent inability to concentrate on their work or in meetings

Recent inability to complete any of their work

Encourage them to talk about their struggle and actively listen

Enabling individuals to speak about what they are struggling with can be the best way of supporting them in what they’re going through. Don’t be afraid to start a conversation with someone if you are worried about them.

Encourage them to seek help for what they are struggling with

Remind the person, there is always someone to listen and support them with whatever they are struggling with.

Our awareness campaign includes the support that is available to all staff from our mental health first aiders and our Employee Assistance Programme.
