SCOPE OF WORK New Shires is now known as Highcross. The redeveloped retail centre offers an awe-inspiring mix of fashionable stores, stylish restaurants and true city centre living that has reinvented Leicester and changed the perception of the city.
Since opening in September 2008, Highcross has become Leicester's biggest and most successful re-development, home to an unrivalled selection of leading retailers, cafes and restaurants and a 12 screen Cinema de Lux.
Construction work involved a series of RC frames within a congested site and completed within an exacting programme. Featured buildings included a new four-storey John Lewis department store and an extension to the car park levels across a new central mall. The centre now has a capacity for 3,000 cars.
The latter aspect included a four metre deep 30m long transfer structure to take the new car park access across the 12m high mall and involved the use of innovative falsework and rebar fixing techniques. The reinforced concrete package was completed on time by Byrne Bros in June 2007.
