LONDON 2012 OLYMPIC STADIUM

Byrne Bros. was appointed by Sir Robert McAlpine/Team Stadium in spring 2008 for the construction of the 2012 Olympic stadium’s in situ concrete works for the sub and superstructure.

Before construction, the original structural design and proposed practicable alternatives were reviewed to ensure quality and programme. For example, using precast beam and hollowcore slabs in the north and east stands to overcome poor ground conditions, the extensive use of on-site precasting to provide high quality finishes where needed, and the use of prefabricated reinforcement to meet programme and tolerance requirements of 60,000 seater concrete framed stadium on a brownfield site alongside mainline railway tracks. The structure comprised four suspended in situ slabs, eight main cores which provide support to the clear spanning roof.
